It’s not just about honeybees…
For me, beekeeping was a portal through which I gained an entirely new perspective on my relationship with the Earth. To be a good beekeeper, one must become intimately attuned to the rhythms of nature, the seasonality of each bloom, and the intricate web of life that surrounds us.
Feral Farms aims to work in partnership and reciprocity with the land. It doesn’t start nor end with honeybees. Rather, I approach my work with consideration and respect for all species and the delicate balance of life on our planet.
In North America, honeybees are an introduced agricultural species that are integral to our food systems. Here in North Carolina, they share an ecosystem with more than 500 species of native bees on which our local flora depend for survival. There is so much happening around us that we, as humans, can go our whole lives overlooking. Tuning in to these small details and connecting to the ecosystem as a part of it has transformed the way I live.
I am deeply inspired by Indigenous wisdom and hold immense gratitude and respect for the Anikituwagi (Cherokee) people who tended this land for many generations before being displaced by settler colonial violence.
With a degree in Environmental Science and a background in wildlife conservation, I bring a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to my beekeeping that highlights the important intersections of agriculture and ecology, and examines how we, as humans, fit into it all.
